Written report

Written Report

I have been assigned to produce a written report from the company i an employed by, Fivestar, which intends to inform my commissioners, about the revelations that i have made about crime in an area of my choice, which has been Banstead, Surrey.

In my written report, I will be talking about my interview that i conducted on the subject of Banstead and the levels of crime in Banstead. In this project, i was trying to find out the severity and frequency of crime in Banstead which is committed by teenagers. I was trying to find this out because crime is still very apparent in Bantsead and happens all the time although the cases are never serious enough to be televised or broadcasted and i think it is important for the Banstead community to know that it still happens and for them to be aware of it so certain security implications can be put in place to prevent further crimes and violations from happening in the future. this film is being pitched to the filmmaking company 'Fivestar' in hopes that they will go ahead and distribute my documentary with the research that i have conducted for them about the crime rate in Banstead. The main purpose of this research was to find out the levels of crime and the severity of crime in Banstead; crime in banstead is not something that is very popular and many people are left unaware of this so this is an education in itself.

One of the several independent research methods that i used have been a Census, which is a form of secondary research. Census is an official count or survey used to measure statistics, usually of population but also factors within counties, county's or towns poverty rate, crime rate, income and education level. Using the information from the Census, I managed to locate a page which gave me statistics on the amount of crime in which is committed in the Banstead area, which forms of crime are most popular and the age group of teenagers are committing the crime.

The results from Census gave me the percentage about Banstead having the highest crime rate in the whole of Preston Ward which is Banstead, Burgh heath, Tadworth, Kingswood, Walton, Nork, Woodmensterne and Tattenhams. The preston ward which includes banstead has a poverty rate of 23%, compared to 10.3% in Surrey and 20.6% in England. 22% of children of all ages in Preston live in poverty, compared to 10% in Surrey and 20% in England.

The age range in Banstead gives us an insight as to who is committing the crimes as age is an important factor which helps us figure out and understand where its likely to start etc. For example if a group of young people have been reported to be vandalising or committing crimes, due to the information that has been fond on survey we can assume the likelihood and track down the age, then locations of these young people and come to the result that they are most likely teenagers, in the Preston Ward.

Another one of my research methods has been via the Northern Eco website which has cases of violent teenagers whom commit crimes in Banstead and tell me of the severity of the cases. it shows crimes that were committed around the UK and showed me a few in Banstead.

The primary research i conducted consisted of questionnaires and surveys via Survey Monkey. This  has been another one of my sources of information; the website providing several different questionnaires for teenagers who have witnessed crimes, been involved in a crime and those teenager who have ideas in ways to prevent crimes from further happening in the Banstead town. The questionnaire has recently been taken down, so is unavailable to be viewed.

this is a survey which i conducted myself about crime in Banstead, gathering the thoughts and opinions of those who are from the area or are in the area regularly.  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/D75BGWB

Here is an example of some of the questions which feature in the questionnaire that i conducted.

Another resource that i have use is Prezi, which is an online dynamic presentation application which allows me to present information using its dynamic visual aid, but also to gather then analyse results which i collected and put them into understandable formats such as tables and graphs.

The next bit of research that i looked at was audience research. This type of research monitors the audiences habits and preferences and behaviours. The first bit of audience research i looked at was audience classification these include: Socio-economics, geodemographics, pschographics, ethnographics, age, gender, sexual orientation, occupation and education. Audience research is effective because it helps you understand your audience and the kind of material that is necessary for them to be exposed to to ensure you gain the best results.

The next method of research we looked at was production research. This looks at and understands what is needed, how it will be used and when its actually required at the production stage. This research looks deeply into the content and resources. Resources include: Personnel, talent, finance, suppliers, facilities, locations. This research includes logistical support, costs, viability and placement. This research also included publication, broadcast, webcast and podcast.

The last section of research we looked at was market research. This is the research that gives you knowledge on what you need to include into your product, what differs your product and the competitors,  the potential competitors you will face as well as what advertising strategies will be suitable for you with the consideration of things such as your budget. The types of research i looked at was were product market, competition, competitor analysis, advertising placement and advertising effectiveness. Market research is effective because it looks at the things which are a priority in terms of selling a successful product and including all of the factors to succeed within the project, with the product being available and needed to those whom fit into your criteria.

Comparison with an already existing documentary – Young kids, Hard time - and my own documentary.
Things we do that they don’t
We only focus on a regional outlook on our documentary and the teenagers, whereas Young kids, Hard time focuses on nationally in a broader range.
Things we do better than them?
In my film, I highlight teenagers and focus on their behaviour. This is much easier for me to conduct as I am a teenager myself and know them better than someone who makes a documentary who is 30 plus years old. Unlike in Young kids, hard time they used ideas from adults perception.
Things we do equally well
I equally express the behaviours of teenagers, although in different ways. I also clearly convey the message in which we are trying to project in our documentaries.
Things they do that we don’t
Young kids, Hard time include other factors which feature around teenagers which might influence them to behave in a different way depending on what they are exposed to.

Finally I can conclude that the research that i have conducted could be enough for me to successfully make a product which would launch into the market and have all the  customers i aimed at show an interest or purchase my product. Both me and the competitors have weaknesses and strengths on our side which may or may not determine the outcome to the product i have to offer. The only major advantage that the competitor has over me is the unlimited budge which would mean that money they have to spend can venture much further into the production process, unlike with me, the budget is incredibly tight and limited, however, staying on the positive side of things, the issue is not impossible to be resolved.

Another means of research which i organised and conducted was an interview on Teenagers and Crime in Banstead.
